The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
When I first started reading the book I thought "what the heck is this!" Before long I was pulled into a time and place, by someone I hadn't thought about and if so would have hoped never to see, death's angel, or collector of souls. Death narrates the story of Liesel, a girl in Nazi Germany. Her mother has given her over to a foster couple near Munich and her brother has died on the train on the way to Munich. Death follows Liesel during the years of the war while she becomes The Book Thief. trying to rescue books before they are destroyed.
The story is told with so much compassion that you can't help being drawn into it.
