Review: A Good Marriage

A Good Marriage A Good Marriage by Stephen King
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Very satisfying novella by Stephen King. Asks the question, what would you do if you discovered that your lovely husband of twenty-seven years is actually a serial killer and one of the most evil one at that.

Bob tells his wife Darcy that he is finished with all that and she can count on him that he will not do any more killings. His strange confession to her of course seems to blame the victims and a friend of his who was killed in school before they could carry out a plan to take guns to school and shoot people.

Darcy only discovered the truth by a fluke when she went looking for spare batteries for the remote control in the garage. She uncovered a very secret hiding place where the "trophies" were kept.

An excellent read.

Review: The American Agent

The American Agent The American Agent by Jacqueline Winspear
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The best episode to date. The continuing story of Maisie Dobbs, private investigator and psychologist. We are now into the midst of WWII and things in her personal life seem to be looking up a bit for Maisie.

An excellent read. Hopefully there will be more from the series.

Review: Unwritten

Unwritten Unwritten by Charles Martin
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

A bit of a disappointment for a Charles Martin novel. A little bit too much "strong silent man rescues lady in distress". I didn't hate the book and there was some very nice writing, just doesn't live up to his previous novels for me.

Review: To Die But Once

To Die But Once To Die But Once by Jacqueline Winspear
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another great installment of the Maisie Dobbs adventures. We are now getting quite into WWII. Maisie and Pris have volunteered to drive ambulances and are in training for that.

The two sleuths, Maisie and Billy, have outed some more bad apples and some very close to home. Also, Maisie has made an important decision regarding Anna, the little orphaned girl that she has been caring for since her grandmother passed.

Great read.

Review: Sons

Sons Sons by Pearl S. Buck
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Just couldn't get involved in this story the same as I did The Good Earth. Will probably give the next one in the series a miss.

Review: Big Driver

Big Driver Big Driver by Stephen King
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Excellent novella by Stephen King. A woman writer is an invited speaker to various locations in libraries and other venues throughout the year and she is planning on using the money she is gifted as her retirement. On one of her talking engagements, the librarian there was very helpful in guiding her to a better, shorter route for her return home. When she arrives at a certain spot in the road, there are pieces of wood with nails poking up and she is unable to stop in time to avoid a flat tire. A big fellow driving a truck came to her rescue and her ordeal began.

A great read with a great ending.

Review: 1922

1922 1922 by Stephen King
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A powerful novella. The story opens with Wilfred confessing to murdering his wife and recruiting his son to assist. He then goes into all the details of the murder and the horrible aftermath of the terrible act.

I have always been creeped out by the thought of rats but now, OMG!

Review: In This Grave Hour

In This Grave Hour In This Grave Hour by Jacqueline Winspear
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Only a couple of books left for me in this series and I am going to really miss the story. In this installment WWII has been declared and it will be all hands on deck again for Maisie and Pris. There have been children billetted at the Dower House and one little girl in particular is unknown and unidentified. As well as looking for a murderer, Maisie and Billie take on the job of trying to discover who the little girl is and where her family is.

Another excellent read.

Review: Bridge of Clay

Bridge of Clay Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Have given this one star because I like the writer. It usually takes awhile to get into a book fully, but in this case it was so mixed up, and very odd, it didn't take shape at all for me.

Review: Journey to Munich

Journey to Munich Journey to Munich by Jacqueline Winspear
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

*the characters
*the main idea
*the plot or what it's done with the idea
*the style of writing
*the ending

In this episode Maisie steps into real danger when she tries to locate and liberate a VIP from Dachau Concentration Camp. Maisie is trying to get her life back. Since losing her husband and unborn child she has been floundering but she is coming out of the darkness and I believe she is deciding to put her fantastic skills back into working order.

An excellent ending in this episode.
