On Canaan's Side by Sebastian Barry
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
An excellent read. This book just brings out so much, but in a simple way. One woman just working and doing her best in an America that takes your life's work, your children, sends them to war and never returns them. Even if they return in body, you never see them again in mind.
A young girl and her fiance arrive from Ireland after being persecuted to find themselves in a bright new world where anything is possible.
Rather than give an account of the story, I would like rather to comment on the beautiful writing, very poetical and beautiful. There were many sayings which I felt were unique to this writer and which sound lovely to your ear. One such saying that I have thought about is: She knew her river well, and all the fish that swam in it. Not a direct quote but such a profound statement. It could have so many meanings and just one example of the beautiful writing by this author.
